Why Jordan For Incentives, Conferences, & Exhibitions ?
A range of new facilities combined with a dynamic marketing strategy by the Jordan Tourism Board have triggered a steady increase in the incentive, conference, and the trend is expected to increase in coming years.
“We’ve always known of our ability to attract these kinds of visitors to Jordan, due to our unique combination of archaeological and religious sites, good weather, friendly people, and wide range of action outdoor adventures,” says Tourism and Antiquities Minister Aqel Biltaji, “but we only lacked specialized and modern facilities to handle large meetings and exhibitions. Now that such facilities are in place, we are witnessing brisk growth in this sector.”
The major new developments driving this sector include the opening of the Zara Center in Amman the first purpose built venue in Jordan for meetings and exhibitions the expansion or construction of several rooms in this category), the development of two venues for gatherings of over 2000 people at a time, and a burst of innovative services, private sector hotels and destination management companies.
The Jordan Inter-Continental Hotel has completed an expansion project that allows it to cater to groups of 1500 or more, and Le Meridian Hotel is building a large new convention center that will also cater to conferences and exhibitions. The renovated Radisson SAS hotel in Amman has also enhanced its capacity to handle large groups for meeting or exhibitions, while the new Sheraton and Four Seasons hotels in Amman will also be able to cater to this sector of the travel market. Three other facilities are popular venues for meetings or performances. The Royal cultural Center in Amman – site of several Arab and Middle Eastern Summits continues to attract large meetings, alongside performances in its plush theatre auditorium that seats 300 people. Gatherings of 3000 people and more can be accommodated in auditoriums at the Hussein Sports City in Amman and the new suburban facility at Amman University.
Jordan’s capabilities as a venue for conferences were on show in early May when some 1400 people from110 countries gathered for the seven-day-long conference of the inter Parliamentary Unions. Several thousand delegates will gather in Amman in October when the International Union for the Conservation of Natural holds a major conference in Jordan. The world Summit for Peace through Tourism in November will bring to gather at least 1000 participants form around the world, including numerous heads of state and government. Operations Military Exhibitions, a national furniture exhibition, MEXCOM-the Middle East Communications Exhibitions, METS-the Middle East Technology show, and FOODEX_the Arab International Food Production and Packaging Exhibition and Conference.
“We’ve seen clearly from our marketing efforts that demand is high for conferences, exhibitions, and incentive travel in Jordan, and now that we have the facilities for large meetings both in Amman and at unique natural and archaeological sites around the country – we expect this sector of the market to grow rapidly,” said Jordan Tourism Board director Marwan Khoury.
Multiple Advantages
Jordan’s advantages in the meetings/incentives market sector is its ability to cater to large gatherings in world-quality hotels and meeting centers while simultaneously offering guests unique adventures in their spare time. These include experiencing the warm, buoyant water of the Dead Sea, snorkeling or scuba diving in the Red sea, or soaking in the soothing mineral springs that once attracted King Herod and Roman generals; trekking in the desert by camel or four-wheel -drive vehicles, camping in the grandeur of Wadi Rum’s moonscape terrain, riding World War One – vintage steam trains through desert terrain dotted by Ottoman era castles, banqueting in Crusader halls and Roman theaters, and making horseback treks along the ancient spice and incense routes that pass through the hills of Petra, and, for the really adventurous, experiencing Jordan form the air, in helicopters, micro-lights, or gliders.
We have also developed some new thrills for visitors, such as moonlight banquets along the Dead Sea shore, surviving attacks by Bedouin raiders against steam driven trains in the desert sunrise breakfasts at holy mountains such as Mt. Nebo and Aaron’s Mountains in Petra, and roman banquets in full ancient dress amidst the colonnaded streets and theaters of Jerash.
